Why Should I Keep a Journal?

The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, 1Nephi 9: 5-6 states: "Wherefore, the Lord hath commanded me to make these plates for a wise purpose in him, which purpose I know not. but the Lord knoweth all things from the beginning; wherefore, he prepareth a way to accomplish all his works among the children of men; for behold, he hath all power unto the fulfilling of all his words. And thus it is. Amen."

Nephi didn't know why he was writing on the plates. He only knew that it was the Lord's desire that he obey. Nephi chose to obey, and his writings have blessed millions of lives. As individuals in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, individuals are encouraged to write a record of our lives. Or in other words keep a journal. Many chose to do this with blogging. For me, I prefer writing by hand in a bound journal. I love the feel of the page. I do however enjoy a little blogging. We are promised that if we keep a journal, that they will be a blessing for us, and for our children and future generations.

Take a moment to think about the pioneers and it is easy to see that this blessing is true and the promise is sure. I personally feel that I'm not going through the pain that the pioneers endured. Why then, is it important for me to keep a journal? I don't know who my words will affect. But God knows. And God speaks to his children through the prophet, and the prophet has said that keeping a journal is important. "...whether by my voice, or by the voice of my servants, it is the same." Doctrine and Covenants 1:38.

Like Nephi, I may not know why the Lord wants me to keep a record of my life and the events I witness, but one day, they will bless another and help the Holy Spirit lead them to Christ. That is the greatest blessing of all.

Genesis 1:16 "Greater Light"

Genesis 1:16 states: "God made a greater light to rule the day.

When I read this on November 27, 2011 I recorded this in my scripture journal:

"I want to be a greater light for my Heavenly Father and his Son Jesus Christ. Christ is the Greatest light of all and he is our example on this earth. I too want to be like Christ and be with my Heavenly Father again".

Now I want to add on to this thought. I want to be an example of the believers. I want to be able to strengthen those around me. This will not always be easy. Satan will try to interfere with my righteous desires. I must not let him win. There is so much good I can do. I shudder to think how many lives would be affected if I strayed even a little from the straight and narrow path leading to eternal life. I am an example for more people than I realize. I don't want to negatively affect the spiritual well-being of anyone on earth.

Today I was able to practice what I call my "hostess mode". I worked at the Applebee's in Cedar City, Utah for 11 months and absolutely loved it. However, I have started questioning sincerity at times because certain behaviors have become mere habits. Such as opening the door for others around me. At work it was a required behavior for my job. I worried when I continued to behave as though I was at work. I wondered if I was smiling and talking to people because I wanted to or if it was because of work habits. THAT questioning is how Satan tried to get to me.

I overcame this obsticle when I thought about it for a while. I remembered that I did these things even before it was my job. That's why the job was perfect for me. I genuinely enjoy meeting new people. And opening doors for others with a smile makes me a happy boost, and brightens the days of those around me too.

Another advantage is that I find others that open doors and notice them more. There are many Gentlemen and Gentlewomen out there. As long as I pay attention I notice them. Today I had the door held for me almost as much as I held the door for others. I would guess it's the mentality of "Pay it Forward". I probably didn't start it, but I at least helped continue rounds of service today. And that makes all the difference.

I would recommend, that the next time you are going through a door that you hold it a little bit longer. Let someone come in behind you. This can be anywhere: at work, school, out shopping, or at home. And don't meet them with a scowl and frown, greet them with a smile from the heart. It will lift both of your spirits. The blessings are boundless.
